Happy Saturday! I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for joining me today on this journey through words. Your presence and support mean the world to me, and I am deeply grateful for your time and attention. Today's blog post holds a special significance as I pay tribute to a guiding light, Dr. Fiyah Oates.

For some time now, I have been hesitant to pen down these words, reluctant to confront the reality of letting go. But today, I find myself ready to embark on this journey of remembrance and reflection. Today, I invite you to join me as I delve into the heartwarming experiences and cherished memories, I shared with Dr. Fiyah.

Introduction:

Meeting Dr. Fiyah was an experience that left an indelible mark on my heart. It happened in a place I least expected – at the University for Parents. This unique community, designed for parents, without children, it is for anyone. It offered me a sense of belonging during a time when I felt lost and isolated. As I embarked on my healing journey, little did I know that Dr. Fiyah's presence would become a beacon of hope and guidance for me.

The Encounter:

I vividly remember the first time our paths crossed during the "New Way Forward" class for women. Dr. Fiyah's light shone brightly in the room, casting away any doubts or hesitations I had. Despite my initial apprehension, I found myself drawn to her warmth and genuine demeanor. As she shared her wisdom and insights, it felt as though she was speaking directly to my soul.

Embracing the Journey:

The "New Way Forward" class with Dr. Fiyah and my fellow queens was nothing short of transformative. Over the course of 10 weeks, we delved deep into topics that resonated with our souls, uncovering layers of wisdom and insight that would shape our paths moving forward. But even as the class came to an end, I knew in my heart that my journey with Dr. Fiyah was far from over.

A Leap of Faith:

With a fire ignited within me, I eagerly signed up for Dr. Fiyah's entrepreneurship class in the following semester, along with another class at the University for Parents. Armed with an idea to start a nonprofit and a vision board filled with dreams, I stepped into the classroom ready to turn my aspirations into reality. However, amidst the excitement, I often found myself grappling with self-doubt and comparison, especially when faced with classmates who seemed miles ahead in their entrepreneurial journeys. Finding Inspiration: It was during one of these moments of doubt that Dr. Fiyah offered me a lifeline of inspiration. Quoting the scripture from Habakkuk 2:2-3, she reminded me of the power of vision and the importance of staying steadfast on the path towards my dreams. Her words resonated deep within me, and I knew that I had stumbled upon a guiding light in my journey.

Turning Vision into Action:

With renewed determination, I took Dr. Fiyah's words to heart, adding the scripture to my vision board as a daily reminder of the promise of my dreams. I shared my progress with Dr. Fiyah, who celebrated my victories and offered invaluable guidance on the practical steps needed to bring my nonprofit, Sources of Light, to life. Despite the challenges I faced in my personal life, her teachings instilled in me the belief that nothing was impossible with faith and perseverance.

A Festive Gathering: As the holiday season approached in late 2022, the bustling halls of the University for Parents gradually quieted down as students and faculty prepared to take a well-deserved break. Yet, amidst the festive cheer and anticipation of the holidays, there was an undeniable sense of camaraderie and connection that lingered in the air. It was during this time that we gathered together for a heartwarming meet and greet, celebrating the bonds forged through our shared experiences at the University for Parents. In the spirit of the season, students and faculty alike came together for an unforgettable evening of food, laughter, and meaningful conversation. The atmosphere was brimming with warmth and goodwill as we exchanged stories of how we first discovered the University for Parents and the impact it had made on our lives. From tales of personal growth to anecdotes of newfound friendships, each story served as a testament to the transformative power of community.

Building Bridges: As we mingled and connected with one another, it became evident that the University for Parents had not only provided us with valuable knowledge and skills but had also paved the way for lasting friendships and connections. We laughed, we shared, and we bonded over our shared experiences, finding solace and support in the company of like-minded individuals who understood and empathized with our journeys. Capturing Memories: Amidst the festivities, we took a moment to immortalize the occasion with a group picture—a snapshot of the joy and camaraderie that filled the room. Little did we know at the time that this picture would serve as a cherished memento, a reminder of the special bond we shared and the memories we created together.

A Melodic Journey: In the midst of 2023, I found myself embarking on a journey of personal growth and self-discovery unlike any other. It was during this transformative period that I had the privilege of enrolling in Dr. Fiyah's personal development class, along with another enriching course at University for Parents (U4P). Little did I know that these experiences would ignite a profound transformation within me, guiding me towards newfound heights of empowerment and enlightenment. One of the most memorable aspects of Dr. Fiyah's classes was her unwavering love for the band Earth, Wind & Fire. Like a musical maestro, she would infuse our sessions with the uplifting rhythms and melodies of their timeless classics. From "September" to "Shining Star," each song served as a source of inspiration and motivation, igniting a spark within me and fueling my journey of self-discovery.

Nurturing Growth: As I immersed myself in Dr. Fiyah's teachings and the vibrant community of U4P, I felt a profound sense of growth and transformation taking root within me. Through her personal development class, I learned invaluable lessons about self-awareness, resilience, and the power of positive thinking. With each passing day, I felt myself spreading my wings like a butterfly, embracing new opportunities and challenges with courage and determination.

Navigating Transitions: As time marched forward to February 2024, my journey with Dr. Fiyah and University for Parents (U4P) continued to unfold, filled with moments of growth, connection, and transformation. Despite having repeated classes, each experience with Dr. Fiyah and the U4P facilitators felt like spreading my wings, embracing new opportunities, and delving deeper into personal and professional development. However, as life's journey took unexpected turns, I found myself facing a difficult decision. Due to conflicts with another mentorship program, I reluctantly had to leave the entrepreneurship class. Similarly, my involvement in the New Way Forward class waned as I dedicated more time to a new community at Dress for Success and embarked on a new career path in March 2024.

A Heartbreaking Loss: Tragically, amidst these transitions, March 11, 2024, became a day forever etched in my memory. It was the day I received the devastating news of Dr. Fiyah's passing. I still remember the disbelief and shock that gripped me upon hearing the news. How could someone so vibrant and full of life be gone? Yet, as reality set in, tears flowed, and emotions overwhelmed me, I knew that her light would continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew her.

A Legacy of Light: To Dr. Fiyah, I express my deepest gratitude for being a beacon of light, a pillar of support, and a guiding force in my life and the lives of countless others. Your wisdom, kindness, and unwavering belief in our potential have left an indelible mark on my soul. Though you may no longer walk among us, your legacy of love and empowerment will forever live on in the hearts of those you touched.
